They had organised breakfast for the 141 route bus drivers and conductors, who generally take a breakfast break at the top of Manning Place close to the Church.

Fishermen Protest against dredging for Port City

On October 1st 2016, a protest was held by the fishermen, in 8 fishing villages from Kammalthota to Uswetakeiyawa. This protest was organized by the People's Movement against the Port City. Several members of the clergy and number of Civil Society members participated in this event as well.

Fishing in Different Forms

The Madal Fisherman P. Anthonis Nonis, a retired fisherman of the area brings to our attention the fact that as the population has increased there are more fisherman and more boats. This has a negative impact on the Madal fisherman. Because all these boats put down their nets and catch fish in deeper waters, therefore the fish do not have a chance to reach the shallower waters as Madal fishing is only permitted within a 1.5 Km distance from the shore. Nanguran Anchoring harbour has caused problems

P. Anthonis Nonis, an 82 year old retired fisherman, on the beaches nearKapungoda where the Nanguran anchoring harbour is  situated, stated that after they built this harbour, there has been a lot of erosion. Looking at this beach , you can see that the extent of beach is not very far from the land. It extends right up to Dungahapitiya.

Fisher children want land jobs

Ranil Sampath, a fisherman from Madapalama, Hendalais a married man with two children aged four year and nine months respectively. Knowing the difficulties of being a fisherman at sea he says he doesn’t want his children to take up this profession. Hisdesire is to educate them well and see that they do well in life.
