Data over voice?

I lost my phone on New Year’s Day and I have not replaced it as yet! Actually life has been good without it. How do people contact me? Those who really wanted to got me on the landline and that was it!In this day and age when everyone must have a hand held device (no longer can it be called a mobile phone) is this really possible? I think I have proved it, 10 days without a device and I am yet surviving, it has not affected my business.

Being perfectly Frank

A pre-’70s class from an elite school was meeting at a Hikka hotel and one of the members of this class, I am told, was the former chairman of a well-known company.

Shear madness!

A couple of weeks ago, I had a problem recognising someone I knew quite well. I’ve known this lady over some years but suddenly when I ran into her in unfamiliar surroundings it all went embarrassingly blank for a little while. Was it some kind of face recognition problem that I had or something else? I later put it down to the fact that she was probably not wearing any make up. Do women look drastically different with and without make up? I would venture to say yes.

Nemesis

Rupert Murdoch. Something needs to be said about this man who can be named the true media mogul of this day. If any businessman, Sri Lankan or otherwise, intends owning media, he would want to follow in the footsteps of this Australian; or should one really!

An ethnic experiment

I recently went for a stage play, which could well have become a PR disaster but didn’t. It could easily have been interpreted as ‘racist’ and putting it up on the boards, especially in a country that has just finished up a war, which was by far and large termed ‘ethnic,’ was a very brave attempt.‘He Comes From Jaffna,’ a play set in 1908 and written by E.F.C. Ludowyk in 1934, was staged at the Lionel Wendt for four days last week. Directed by JithPeiris and brilliantly performed by a colourful cast, which represented almost every race in the country,…

The Indian caricature

I am sitting in a restaurant in the satellite city of Delhi, Gurgaon India, and in the backdrop are some strange messages. A large hoarding on the wall tells me that ‘An empty belly is the best cook’; probably another version of the old adage, ‘hunger is the best sauce’.

Media big brother

Does the media – and indirectly Public Relations Companies in Sri Lanka – need a watchdog? Somebody to analyse what we write, what gets published and what is missed out?

Social media: Is it journalism?

I seem to be forever getting entangled in this debate between social and mainstream media. There is, increasingly, the idea that somehow social media could take a rank in position above mainstream media.
