What does sustainability mean in the PR business, especially when it is well known the world over that Public Relations specialists are famous for their spin? That is to give various versions of the truth, and by this I mean that sometimes some things are far from the truth! Ahem! The all-important question – is there any hope or redemption for us in this business, i.e. to become honest brokers between the all-powerful fourth estate and the equally powerful business world?

The bitten apple

Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, died last week and I was quite surprised at the response this news received here in Sri Lanka. I thought it especially good, given the fact that Apple is a relatively unknown brand here, since almost all our computers are run on Microsoft (pirated or otherwise).

The road map to move forward: Finding the Sri Lankan equation

Somewhere on a bridge in the Chilaw area, there are a couple of fishermen selling their catch of wewa maalu (tank fish). At around four or five in the evening, passersby can see them at the roadside, pulling out small black fish from a net. The fish are so alive that some even escape from the basket to do a last ditch leap along the side of the road. The fishermen meanwhile conduct brisk business, as passing motorists stop to buy their fresh catch.
