Beyond Qualifications: Preparing Sri Lanka for the Future of Work

For generations, education has been built around a fairly simple promise: study hard, earn a qualification, find a job and build a career. That promise is becoming increasingly difficult to make.

The problem is not that education has lost its value. It is that the world outside the classroom is changing faster than many education systems can adapt. Artificial intelligence, automation, digital platforms, new business models and changing patterns of work are transforming occupations at a speed that would have been difficult to imagine even a decade ago. A three- or four-year qualification can therefore no longer be viewed simply as preparation for a fixed profession. By the time a student graduates, parts of that profession may already have changed. This raises a much larger question for universities, higher education institutes and vocational training providers: are we educating people for the world as it exists today, or preparing them for the world that is coming? That distinction may determine the future of education.

The big picture 

Sri Lanka has no shortage of institutions offering certificates, diplomas, degrees and professional qualifications. The private education market is already crowded, and the temptation for any new entrant is to compete in familiar ways, new programmes, foreign affiliations, impressive campuses and increasingly aggressive marketing. But perhaps the real opportunity lies somewhere else. The educational institution of the future may have to become far more than a place where lectures are delivered and examinations conducted. It may have to become an institution that continuously studies change. It must ask where industries are moving, which jobs are disappearing, which are emerging, what skills employers will need, what technologies are reshaping professions and which human capabilities will remain valuable even as machines become more capable. In other words, education must begin with the future and work backwards.

Future 

Of course, nobody can predict that future with certainty. Any institution claiming to know exactly what the employment market will look like in 2031 should be treated with caution. But uncertainty is not an excuse for ignoring change. There is an important difference between prediction and preparedness We may not know exactly what the future will look like, but we can identify trends. We can study global research. We can examine investment patterns, technological development, demographic change, labour shortages and emerging industries. We can ask employers what they are beginning to require rather than what they required five years ago. That intelligence should then influence what and how we teach.

Consider artificial intelligence. The discussion is often reduced to whether AI will destroy jobs. That is too simplistic. In many occupations, AI will not eliminate the job entirely; it will remove particular tasks within that job.The accountant will remain, but parts of accounting will be automated. The journalist will remain, but some production processes will change. The doctor will remain, while diagnosis and information processing become increasingly supported by technology. The business analyst will remain, but many analytical processes that once required hours of human effort may take seconds. The real educational question is therefore not simply, “Will this profession survive?” It is, “What will a person in this profession need to be capable of doing when the technology has changed?” That is a very different way of designing education.

It also challenges one of the most deeply entrenched assumptions in higher education: that the qualification itself is the product. Increasingly, it is not.

A qualification is evidence that a person has completed a programme of study. What matters to the student and eventually to the employer is what that person can actually do. This is why practical exposure must become much more central to education. A student studying electronics should work with electronics. A media student should experience contemporary production environments. A business analytics student should deal with real business problems and real data. An engineering student should understand what happens when theoretical knowledge meets the limitations, pressures and unpredictability of an actual workplace.

Internship 

Internships and apprenticeships should therefore not be treated as optional additions to education. In many programmes they should form part of the educational architecture itself. For an organisation, wanting to make a difference in education, this creates an interesting opportunity. Instead of simply saying, “Come and study with us,” an institution could say, “Come and study, experience the workplace and understand how the industry itself is changing.” That is a much more compelling promise.

There is another dimension that Sri Lanka cannot afford to overlook: vocational education. For too long, societies such as ours have created an artificial hierarchy in which the university degree sits at the top and vocational qualifications somewhere below it. The economy may increasingly prove that assumption wrong. A young person with strong practical skills in electronics, electrical systems, industrial technology, vehicle maintenance or specialised technical services may have excellent opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship or overseas work. More importantly, that person may have the ability to create his or her own livelihood. That is an increasingly important measure of education. If a student cannot find conventional employment, can the skills acquired allow that person to establish a small enterprise, work independently or provide a specialised service? Education should not merely create job seekers. It should also create people capable of creating economic activity.

The same principle applies at the professional end of the market. A 40-year-old executive may not need another three-year degree. He may need a six-week programme in AI, a weekend course in data interpretation or a short qualification in digital transformation. The education institution of the future will therefore have to abandon the idea that learning belongs to one stage of life. A person may need to return repeatedly. This means that the relationship between student and institution should not necessarily end at graduation. Graduates may require periodic updates, microcredentials, new technical skills and professional refreshers throughout their careers. In a world where technology changes rapidly, the concept of becoming “fully educated” at the age of 22 is increasingly unrealistic. The future may belong to institutions that build lifelong learning communities rather than simply graduate alumni. But perhaps the biggest information gap exists even before the student enrols.

Parents 

When a parent spends several million rupees on a child’s education, the most important question is not the colour of the prospectus or the size of the campus. It is this: What happens to my child afterwards? This is where higher education institutions could become much more transparent. How many graduates found employment? How long did it take? How many entered the field they studied? How many became entrepreneurs? How many continued to higher education? What did employers think of them? These are uncomfortable questions, which may be precisely why they matter.

Education providers routinely publish enrolment numbers, graduation photographs, international partnerships and student testimonials. Much less attention is given to graduate outcomes. A genuinely forward-looking institution could change that. It could publish an annual graduate outcomes report and allow the public to judge its success not by how many students entered the institution but by what happened to them after they left. That level of accountability could itself become a competitive advantage. There is also room for something even more ambitious: a dedicated futures intelligence unit attached to an educational institution. Such a unit could continuously examine international research and translate it into information that ordinary students and parents can understand. It could study the future of work, employment trends, technology, AI, vocational demand and emerging industries. Its findings could then be published through an online magazine or digital platform. Rather than becoming another institutional newsletter filled with photographs of ceremonies, such a publication could ask important questions. Which jobs are disappearing? Which skills are becoming more valuable? What occupations are emerging? What will AI change next? What sectors will Sri Lanka need workers for five years from now? What skills are other countries beginning to recruit? What does international research tell us about the next decade of work? The objective would not be to pretend to possess a crystal ball. It would be to create a population that thinks about the future. That, ultimately, may be one of the greatest responsibilities of education.

We often ask young people what they want to become. Perhaps we should also ask what kind of world they are preparing to enter. The traditional educational formula was relatively simple:

Study. Qualify. Find a job.

The emerging world demands something more complex:

Understand. Learn. Experience. Adapt. Keep learning.

No university, institute or vocational college can guarantee what the world will look like five years from now. But it can make a different promise. It can promise to keep looking ahead. And perhaps that is what education for the world ahead should really mean.
