A fisherman in the Negombo lagoon stated that now only small fish get caught in these nets and some prawns the amount of prawns have reduced.
He says that because the outlets of the sewage pipes have been directed into the lagoon, the chemicals in the toilet cleaning liquid also enter the water all the prawns die.
This never happened those days, these problems started after big hotels and houses were constructed around the lagoon. In the earlier days there was no problem with the breeding of fish and prawns, and we also had a good catch.
Another fisherman said that big buildings and houses have been constructed around the lagoon, and the rich people live in comfort but because of the sewage waste of the big man it is the small man that has to face these problems and go hungry. The catch is there today and gone tomorrow.
