The Creole dancers from the Batticaloa Burgher community performed at the Wings festival on Saturday the 12th November 2016. (Scroll Down for Video).
The Batticaloa Burgers have spent their time as masons, carpenters, barbers and fisherman while living life to its fullest. Over the years, they mingled with the Tamils in the area learning the language and marrying the people (which have lead to the gradual extinction of the Creole Portuguese spoken by them). They still have very European names such as Jacob, Harrington, Barthelot and Symmons, and keep their Burgher tradition and customs which have been passed down through the ages.
